Cashew kernel grades.

Five grades off one processing line in Guinea-Bissau: three whole-kernel sizes, splits and graded pieces. Grade describes size and integrity, not quality.

The W number is a kernel count per pound, not a quality score.

W stands for white whole kernel. The figure that follows is the approximate number of kernels in a pound, so W240 holds roughly 240 large kernels to the pound and W450 roughly 450 smaller ones. A smaller kernel is not an inferior kernel; it is a different size for a different job.

Splits are kernels that have separated along their natural seam. Butts and pieces are graded fragments. Where a kernel is ground, blended or dispersed through a formulation, whole-piece integrity adds cost without adding value, which is why ingredient manufacturers buy splits and pieces by preference.

If you are specifying a new product and are unsure which grade fits, W320 is the usual starting point. We will send samples of the adjacent sizes alongside it so your quality team can judge directly.
